How to choose a belt buckle
A buckle has to suit both the belt it sits on and what you're wearing it with. American buckles tend to be bigger and heavier than a standard trouser buckle, so the strap behind them matters. Too narrow and a large buckle looks top-heavy and twists. Matched properly, it sits flat and looks like it belongs there. Five things to check:
- Match the width. Each buckle is made for one strap width, so pick a buckle the same width as your strap.
- 1½ inch suits most American buckles. It's the standard jean loop width and carries a bigger buckle well.
- Narrower for dress belts. 1 inch reads as formal, 1¼ inch as everyday and office.
- Any buckle, any strap. Our straps fasten with a press stud or a Chicago screw, and either works with any buckle in this range.
- Ordering a strap too? Measure the belt you wear now from the fold at the buckle end to the hole you use most. We make the strap to that size, so it fastens on the centre hole.

Where American belt buckles come from
The large decorative buckle started out as a practical fastening for cowboys and ranch hands in the 1800s. Western films made it famous, and rodeos across North America still give buckles as prizes. That history is why a big buckle still says something about the person wearing it. Today it's worn as much for the look as for holding a belt up, and a good buckle is the quickest way to change an outfit.
Complete the look
A buckle is only as good as the belt behind it. Our leather belt straps are full-grain leather, made to your belt size so they fasten on the centre hole rather than the last hole or a hole you've punched yourself. They come in widths from 1 to 4 inches and a range of colours. Because any buckle fits any strap, you can buy one strap and two or three buckles, and change your belt to suit the day.

Frequently asked questions
What size belt buckle should I get?
Match the buckle width to your strap. For most American and statement buckles, a 1½ inch strap works best.
Will these buckles fit my belt?
They fit any of our leather belt straps, which fasten with a press stud or a Chicago screw. For another make of belt, check that the buckle width matches the strap.
Can I wear an American belt buckle with a suit?
A smaller, plainer buckle on a 1 or 1¼ inch strap works with smarter clothes. Save the large designs for jeans.
How do I look after a belt buckle?
Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth and store it somewhere dry.
How long does delivery to Canada take?
Your strap is made in 3 to 5 working days, then delivery to Canada takes a further 5 to 7 working days.
