The right belt width comes down to three things: what your belt loops will actually take, what the occasion calls for, and what suits your frame. Get those three right and the rest is buckle and colour.
We make belts from 1" to 4" wide at Buckle My Belt. These five cover almost every belt loop: 1" (25mm), 1¼" (32mm), 1½" (38mm), 1¾" (45mm) and 2" (50mm). Every one is cut from full-grain leather 3-5mm thick and made to your belt size, measured from an existing belt, so it fastens on the centre hole. Width is the one decision left to get right.
What belt width fits my loops?
Belt loops are usually sewn to a standard width for the style of trouser, so start there. A 1" loop needs a 1" belt with a little room to move. Anything too wide will not thread through; anything too narrow will look lost and let the belt twist.

If you are between sizes, measure the loop itself rather than guessing from the trouser style. A tape measure across the loop's width takes ten seconds and settles it.
What is the difference between belt widths?
Beyond fit, width changes how a belt reads. A 1" belt sits quiet and formal. A 2" belt is a visible part of the outfit, built for denim and heavier work trousers. The table below is how we map our five widths to loops and formality.

Women's belts follow the same widths. A 1" or 1¼" belt is the usual choice for dress and smart-casual, and the wider widths work the same way for jeans and statement pieces.
What width suits my build?
Build is a proportion guide, not a rule. A slighter frame usually reads better in a narrower belt, 1" to 1¼", since a wide strap can overwhelm the waistline. A larger frame carries 1½" upward comfortably, and the wider widths sit in proportion rather than looking undersized. Loop width still decides what fits; build decides what looks right when there is a genuine choice between two widths.
What thickness is a good leather belt?
Width is not the only measurement that matters. Our belts run 3-5mm thick depending on style, thick enough to hold its shape and mould to you over time, without being stiff on day one. Match your buckle to the strap width too: a slide or frame buckle sized for 1" will not sit right on a 1½" strap, so keep the buckle width and belt width the same.
How to measure your belt loops
- Take the trousers you wear most and lay them flat.
- Measure straight across the width of a belt loop, not along its length.
- Round to the nearest standard width: 1", 1¼", 1½", 1¾" or 2".
- If two pairs take different widths, buy for the pair you wear most. Loops give only slightly, so choose a belt that fits the loop snugly rather than relying on that, otherwise the loop will sag.

How long should the belt tip be?
We cut every belt so the tip sits 7 inches past the centre hole once fastened. Not too long, not too short, just right. If you want it shorter or longer than that, add a note at checkout and we will cut it to your spec.

1½" (38mm) is the standard jean belt width and matches most denim loops. Wider 1¾"-2" belts suit wide-loop jeans and heavier workwear-style denim.
What width belt is best for suits?
1" (25mm) is the correct width for suit trousers and tailored dress wear. It matches the narrower loops and sits quietly under a jacket.
Do women's belts come in different widths to men's?
The same five widths apply to both. Choice comes down to loop width and occasion, not gender, though 1" and 1¼" are the more common dress and smart-casual picks.
Can I get a custom belt width?
